About Target Archery
Target archery is the style of archery shot on an open field with
the targets in a row. There are two styles: recurve and compound
Recurve bows got their name from the design of the bow the limbs
curve in one direction, then 'recurve' back in the opposite
direction. Compound bows give the archer a mechanical advantage.
The recurve bow is used in the Olympic Games. Both compounds and
recurves are shot in World Championship competition.
Like golf, target archery is a
precision skill sport, yet a very social sport, and a sport you can
do all your life or at least as long as you wish!
Target archery is a mind-body sport, equally combining the
physical (setting the body position and executing the shot) and the
mental (learning the skill and discipline to do that consistently).
It doesn't take tremendous strength or endurance, just interest and
the desire to learn. With that, it’s a challenge you can take as far
as you want.
Olympic competition is shot at 70 meters (about 77 yards). For
men, World Championship distances are even longer. However, most people do not shoot
at that level and may not want to shoot distances that long. So, in addition to
the Olympic Round, there are different
rounds shot from shorter distances for youth, new shooters, and
recreational archers. Whether you prefer shorter or
longer distances; whether you want to compete or just shoot for personal enjoyment is your choice. But it's all fun!
With that, it’s a challenge you can take as far as you wish. |
